About Right To Succeed

Right to Succeed Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization with a mission to empower communities to create amazing public schools that help every child to succeed! We believe every child has a right to succeed and have access to a great public school.The Right to Succeed cause is realized through the work and resources of hundreds of individuals and dozens of organizations who have made the Right to Succeed cause their own. They have undertaken the work to create great schools in their communities and neighborhoods. The Right to Succeed cause focuses its efforts on:(a) building public awareness of the severe education crisis through speaking engagements, media, entertainment, and events; (b) helping communities to create vision about what is possible in public education by enabling communities to see and engage with great replicable school models; and (c) providing technical assistance and resources to help communities create the right conditions in their community to support and sustain great schools.Why is this cause so important? America is at risk. Fewer than 25% of children are getting the education and work skills needed to compete and obtain jobs that will pay them enough as adults to economically sustain themselves. Imagine an America 15 years from now when 75% of our citizens will not be able to financially sustain themselves--and who will be our future voters.We need modern schools in every neighborhood that eliminate the dropout rate and prepare students for the best careers and life. The challenge is huge! Our country needs 20,000-30,000 new or transformed high performing schools in the next 10 years to cut the dropout rate by 50%. This large transformation will not take place from a top down Federal or State mandate. It will happen when a community, neighborhood, or citizen's group drives the effort by organizing and creating demand for high performing schools. We believe change happens best when it is bottom-up or top-down initiated, bottom-up driven, and top-down supported.Become a part of this movement and join the cause!

Ted Fujimoto - Chairman Ted Fujimoto helps communities and school districts create and support 21st-century schools. As an entrepreneur and consultant, he has helped develop business strategies for Bay Area Coalition of Essential Schools, Big Picture Learning, Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools, Partnership for Uplifting Communities, Linking Education & Economic Development, California Charter Schools Association and the New York Charter Schools Association. Ted has toured over 500 public schools in the nation, his work represents more than $150 million in funding. He was instrumental in designing and founding Napa New Technology High School and the New Technology Foundation that now comprises 85+ schools nationwide. He has served on the California Education Technology Advisory Committee and received the 2002 Center for Digital Government "In the Arena" award for education leadership in transforming vision to reality. In Converge Magazines "1999 Year in Review", Ted was named one of "Educations Dreamers, Leaders and Innovators." He is pioneer of the "Right to Succeed" movement and believes every child should have the opportunity to succeed. Adalberto Al Andino Adalberto Al Andino has built a 100-plus school network that featured culturally and linguistically diverse curricula and instruction, professional development for teachers and administrators and research-based assessment protocols for La Razas community charter schools and Early College High School Initiative. He was founding Executive Director for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations Millennium Scholars Initiative where he developed, implemented and managed a multi-billion dollar program to increase the number of low-income minorities completing college degrees and graduate programs. As Vice President for Strategy and Development at Jobs for the Future, he worked directly with the CEO/President to innovate organizational performance improvement and successful fundraising strategies. Neil Shah - Treasurer, Secretary Neil is the President of Charter Impact, a consultancy that assists charter schools in finance, budget development, budget management, and compliance. He was the vice president of school finance at Excellent Education Development (ExED), one of the leading charter school business management providers in California which manages all back office financial and compliance functions for numerous charter schools. His clients have included Brighter Choice Foundation, Denver School of Science and Technology, KIPP, Geo Foundation, Uncommon Schools, UNO Charter School Network and dozens of other school organizations. Cavan Chan Cavan Chan is currently CEO of The Studio Box Entertainment. He attributes his many accomplishments to his mentor who assisted him in developing his many talents and recent achievements. Cavan has worked all over the world in multiple industries. Those experiences give him a unique ability to combine industries to accomplish growth in all sectors. His experiences include running Royal Dollar Records to being Vice President of one for the worlds largest motorcycle manufacturers, Zong Shen Inc., where he increased sales from two million to twenty million dollars in just three years. With a savvy business skills and aptitude for finance, Cavan also managed assets of over $100 million dollars as President at Rising Capital Inc. Sean Tsai With a versatile background in Real Estate, Business Development, Technology, and Law, Sean is the epitome of a true entrepreneur. He has experience as a recreational specialist and a partner at H&T Wireless. He has founded numerous companies including CCS Credit Counseling which realized over $2 million in profit during his leadership. Seans incredible ability to build relationships and focused strategies has secured investments worldwide. Sean is a member of the International Lions Club serving his community and education.

Sylvia has a long history in public television and radio including with WTTW and WBEZ as well as with national PBS pledge drives. Sylvia has been nominated for three local Emmys, shares an Edward R. Murrow award with her WBEZ colleagues, and is the recipient of several Chicago Association of Black Journalist awards, and a Peter Lisagor honor from the Chicago Headline Club. She is the director of external affairs for the Illinois Network of Charter Schools and adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago.Kyle MillerKyle Miller served on the founding team as Senior Program Officer with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. She also was part of the Nordstrom Corporate Operation team. Through her landmark work, Kyle invested over $200M to help leaders accomplish systemic social and academic equity outcomes for at-risk students. She designed processes that energized education leaders and communities to have higher expectations for their students, to operationalize a new vision, and to initiate collaborative, productive practices and procedures focused on measurable impact.Pat MelfiInternational Media Marketing Manager, 5 Time Award Winning Promoter of The Year. Pat was instrumental in the creation, production and marketing of jingles for national campaigns, tour management and production for noted bands as Tom Petty, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Alabama and more. Currently active in the daily personal management of multi-platinum and Grammy Award Winning Artists Collin Raye, Juice Newton, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Katie Austin and SUPPLICANT.

Lina So Lina So is a host and entertainment entrepreneur, with over ten years in the entertainment industry in front and behind the camera, representing some of the largest corporations worldwide. Lina has had the opportunity to witness the struggles and devastating circumstances of children through her travels. Linas versatile background includes media director, on camera talent, public relations and strategic planning. She has a diverse network of colleagues which can help connect educational issues and media tools to raise awareness. Lina hopes mobilize supporters and provide leadership that enables youth to reach their full potential. Her entrepreneurial experience as a business owner and consultant, has given her influence in the entertainment and philanthropy communities. Rob NelsonRob Nelson is a television personality, author, lawyer, and political activist. He has experience working directly with President Bill Clinton on the National Youth Reelection Committee and has hosted over a half dozen different national network and major cable TV shows, including two of his own talk shows. His background as political activist and his ability to engage people have made Rob one of the most versatile hosts on television today. Robs experience includes talk show host, primetime reality and investigative field shows and segments. His credits include The Full Nelson on Fox News, The Rob Nelson Show, E! Entertainment, Entertainment Weekly, 60 Minutes, What to Watch, Time Magazine, and US News &World Report. He is also the author of Revolution X, and Last Call. He is a graduate of Stanford Law School, a certified pilot, scuba diver, and extreme sports fanatic. He is currently a mentor for the Taylor Foundation which helps to prevent youth from engaging in gang related activities.Sanaz AbdiSanaz studied communications in Sweden and has traveled worldwide. She has a versatile background in radio, television broadcasting, producing, and journalism. She has also studied real estate and worked as the marketing director for multi-billion dollar companies. Her ability to network clients and create campaigns using entertainment and media will help to highlight the education crisis. Orsoya Tucker Orsoya is an artist at heart with over 10 years of experience in all facets of entertainment including photography, film, and graphic design. Her work has been featured in Level 26, Stained, CSI, Nightstalkers, The Algerian, and Dream of the Butterflies. A native of Hungary, she began her career as a photographer working with children. Skyler performed with Sly at The Montreux Jazz Festival, The North Sea Jazz Festival, Cannes, Olympia, Paris, The Love Box Festival in London and the George Wallace Show, Las Vegas.Brandon Frank Brandon Frank has extensive experience serving clients in the areas of intellectual property and entertainment law, with a special focus on all aspects of trademark, copyright and trade secret law, technology management and licensing, corporate operations and transactions, and e-commerce and the Internet. Brandon has represented software developers, website designers, songwriters, musical performers, producers, authors, screenwriters, production companies, publishing companies, record labels, and visual artists. Brandons business experience includes assisting entrepreneurs and small businesses with planning and development, building management teams and raising capital, managing talent and projects, and branding strategies and marketing. Brandon earned his Master of Laws degree in Law & Government, with specialization in Intellectual Property and Information Policy and a concentration in Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice from American University Washington College of Law in Washington D.C. in 2006. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Southern University Law Center in 2004 and his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Louisiana State University in 2000. He is a member in good standing of the Louisiana Bar Ken Kragen A graduate of Harvard Business School, Ken Kragen's illustrious career far transcends the music and entertainment industries where he has spent many years. He has managed some of the world's most important entertainers, including Kenny Rogers, Lionel Richie, Trisha Yearwood, Olivia Newton John, The Bee Gees, Burt Reynolds, The Smothers Brothers and many others. He was the creator and organizer of "We Are the World", "Hands Across America", and Cisco System's "NetAid". Over 95% of the acts he managed have become stars, and 90% of the projects he created and spearheaded have achieved success.Ken has begun to devote an increasing amount of his time to speaking, writing and consulting for leading corporations and several non-profit organizations. He has worked with Cisco Systems, New York Life Insurance, Eastman Kodak, The Hollywood Reporter and the Country Radio Broadcasters Association. His newest project is called The Ultimate Music Success Summit which brings top music industry people, career consultants and social media experts with aspiring artists for a three day event that focuses on skill develop that will help artists maximize opportunities for a successful music. Ken has lectured at Harvard Business School, USC, Loyola, the University of Tennessee and many other schools. He taught courses at UCLA's Extension Program based on his unique concepts of career development and formulas for advancing projects to a higher level of excellence. Ken is proud of receiving the United Nations Peace Medal for the creation of "Hands Across America", and "We Are the World", making him one of a few private citizens to receive this honor. Ken has also been celebrated by the NAACP, the Los Angeles Advertising Women, and the Boys & Girls Club of America. He received two MTV Awards, An American Music Award, several Emmy nominations, EBONY's American Black Achievement Award, Manager of the Year Award from the Conference of Personal Managers and the International Citizen of the Year Award from the International Visitors Council. He was Alumnus of the Year at his alma mater, the University of California, Berkeley. He is the only individual ever elected President of both the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music. He serves on several charity Boards including The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, Community In Schools and USA for Africa. Sylvia EwingSylvia is a writer, teacher, non-profit executive, and award-winning journalist committed to offering her various life skills and professional experience to help others find self-actualization and enlightenment. Sylvia was the voice of WTTW Channel 11 for many years and has done voice-overs for numerous videos and special projects. Sylvia continues to be an on-air pledge talent for WTTW, and a record setting fundraiser for the most watched PBS station in the country. Other roles at the network over the years have included production and on-air work for public affairs and arts programs. She has also hosted the national PBS pledge breaks for music specials like Love Train Sound of Philadelphia, Straight No Chaser, and others. Sylvia has a long history with WBEZ radio, Chicagos NPR affiliate. She was a correspondent and producer for Eight Forty-Eight, the stations weekday morning newsmagazine, as well as for town hall meetings and online features. Sylvia carried her vision to the stage, producing and/or directing over a dozen shows for Steppenwolf Theatre Companys Traffic arts series. Sylvia has been nominated for three local Emmys, shares an Edward R. Murrow award with her WBEZ colleagues, and is the recipient of several Chicago Association of Black Journalist awards, and a Peter Lisagor honor from the Chicago Headline Club. Sylvia is also an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago where she teaches an undergraduate course, The Business of Broadcasting. Sylvia has been featured in TimeOut Chicago, The Chicago Tribune, and The Chicago Defender, and is a popular and warm moderator and speaker. She is a certified meditation teacher and is currently working on a book about happiness and meditation.Richard J. LewisRichard Lewis has produced 150 and directed 45 episodes of the hit series CSI. His relationship with CSI began when he was invited to direct two episodes in the first season. He went on to direct six episodes and became an in-house director for the second season, and ultimately became a writer, producer, and director for the series. Richards early television experience includes directing the childrens Saturday morning program, The Adventures of Superboy for two seasons. Lewis directed the remake of The Alfred Hitchcock Show and an episode of the Canadian television series Due South, created by Paul Haggis (the writer/director of Crash). His first feature film, Whale Music (1994), was an adaptation of a novel loosely based on the life of the Beach Boys Brian Wilson. Lewis directed and co-wrote the screenplay. His next film was Mordecai Richlers final novel, Barneys Version, starring Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, and Minnie Driver. Robert BrossfieldAfter completing a graduate degree in teaching, Robert spent the next eight years of his life teaching in a Latino and African American community in Southern California. As English teacher, he also worked as the yearbook advisor, newspaper advisor, and coached varsity golf.

Time to "Get Real" About Education

Between dropouts in K-12 and college, only 25% of students are completing an academic degree that would position them to be prepared for life and internationally competitive in the work force. Fundamentally, this means that 75% of students are not acquiring the skills needed to succeed, to sustain themselves as adults or to be contributing, participating citizens. This issue will impact all of us. Our country won't be competitive. Our citizens won't have the spending power to keep our businesses healthy. 25% of the citizens will have to pay for the rest of the country. This is unsustainable! We have a 10 year window to turn this around or our country will be in an unrecoverable decline. We must cut the dropout rate in half across K-12 and post-secondary schools within the next five years! Over the years, grandiose education reform plans that merely tweak the system have come and gone resulting in very few gains. The crazy thing is that schools that are cutting the dropout rate in half and in many cases eliminating it altogether do exist around the country. These schools are closing the achievement gap for kids of color and kids of poverty and are outperforming statewide Caucasian scores. These schools are preparing kids academically, preparing them for successful lives and to be internationally competitive in their careers.As a business owner in 1991, I started the development of the original New Technology High School model in 1991. Our goal was simple. We wanted to produce really competent students who could compete with the best talent around the world because companies like mine needed to hire staff to compete with companies from Europe and Asia. We knew that accomplishing this was going to take more than some tweaks here and there. What was needed was an entirely different approach to what school should be and feel like to support learning, creativity, and productivity in youth. We wanted to produce high school students who had skills and abilities that mirrored those of my company's amazing people who worked collaboratively and effectively with our clients. What has become appalling to me is that of all the policy makers, district and school leaders, foundation leaders, education reform leaders, teachers, principals, and business leaders I have talked to, the vast majority have NEVER spent time in a high performing school. They've never visited the schools that are getting 90-100% of their kids accepted to college with 80% to 100% completion rates. No wonder the education reform rhetoric and strategies seem so disconnected from reality. I worry that education reform is so focused on what we are fighting against (bad schools, bad teachers, bad unions, bad districts, bad funding, bad parenting, bad kids, and bad communities) that there is no vision about what we should be fighting for - great schools for every neighborhood!Ted Fujimoto - Chairman/Co-founder - Right To Succeed

Dropout Numbers Are Worse than Reported

The dropout numbers that you read about in the media (20-40%) often tell only part of the story. These numbers are lower than they should be for following reasons:1. Middle school dropouts are not reported. Only high school numbers are reported. California recently started reporting 8th grade dropouts of 3.49% statewide. This is just for 8th grade. In 1991, San Francisco reported a 15% dropout rate prior to high school. We think the middle school dropout rate nationally is somewhere between 5 to 10%. (SFGate.com August 12, 2011 - California Acknowledges Middle School Dropouts)2. Dropout rates are confused with graduation rates. Graduation rates typically only account for the % of students in the senior year who graduate and does not count the students who dropped out prior to senior year.3. Transfer rates and home schooling rates, that are not verified, may understate dropout rates of students who say they are transferring but fail to register at another school. We think the dropout rate may be underreported by 5-15%. (Atlanta Journal Constitution August 15, 2010 - Atlanta grad rate doesn't add up)4. Of kids who receive a high school diploma and attend college, more than half need to take remedial courses (their high school classes were deficient.) More than half drop out of four year colleges and more than 75% drop out of two year colleges. (College Board, 2010 Progress Report - The College Completion Agenda)So how does this all add up? If we start with 100 students, the following will happen in our system using the more conservative assumptions:- 100 students enter elementary school- 5 drop out in middle school, leaving 95 students- 19 drop out in high school, leaving 76- 4 students are recorded as transfers but really dropped out, leaving 72- Assuming all 72 students go to college, 36 students drop out of college, leaving 36Using this conservative example, out of 100 students, only 36 will make it through college. We believe nationally only 25% of students are making it through with the skills they need to be employable and to sustain themselves.

Unemployable by Military

75% of kids ages 17-24 cannot qualify to work for the military

U.S. military leaders report that 75% of kids ages 17-24 cannot qualify to work for the military due to lack of education, health issues, and/or criminal background. Our kids cannot qualify for the military and are unlikely to qualify for private sector jobs as well. This lack of preparedness and workforce skill deficit transcends to other sectors including manufacturing. Even in this economy, the U.S. manufacturing sector reported a shortage of qualified manufacturing workers with the skills needed. The harsh reality is that 75% of young people who are unemployable. This will produce a huge toll on our economy, social welfare and criminal justice systems.We need schools that prepare students to be successful and employable.

Attributes of a Great School

What makes a school great? A great school educates the whole child and prepares them for a successful life. A great school has a combination of attributes that make it great. There is no one single measurement that tells the whole story. For example, what is the point of a high graduation rate when students do not have enough credits to get into college or if they do have to take remedial courses the first two years because their high school courses were not rigorous enough? Or, a school that has very high test scores but every year they lose a quarter of their student body to dropouts or transfers--testing only the kids that are good test takers?The following is a list of attributes that make a great school--the more attributes the school has and the deeper the implementation of these attributes the better:1. High expectations and no excuses - great schools expect the very top level performance from all students regardless of their challenges. For example, they expect 100% of all students to graduate high school and be accepted into colleges without remediation. Other indicators that could be coupled with high expectations can include high achievement rates on language arts, math, and science (90%+); low discipline incidents (0%) ; high attendance rates (95%+).2. Life preparedness - great schools recognize that test scores are not enough. They also want students to have the skills needed to be successful in life and to be able to compete for the best careers (e.g. 21st century skills - critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and leadership, etc.) 3. Personalized - great schools personalize the school and learning experience for each student based on their needs. They know each student, their interests, passions, and challenges deeply and meet them where they are to take them to the highest level of achievement.4. Strong relationships and culture of trust, respect, and responsibility - great schools establish strong relationships with their students and their families. They build a culture that places trust, respect and responsibility in their students. They help to create supportive social network among the students, teachers, staff, and family members. 5. Relevance - great schools connect and integrate academic content that students learn to authentic real world examples, problems and issues offering students the opportunity to develop real understanding, solutions and products. 6. Student-driven inquiry-based learning - great schools teach using the best research proven practices that highlight how people learn most effectively. They minimize dependence on lecture-memorize-regurgitate-test format and instead practice inquiry-based learning facilitating knowledge acquisition for students through student-driven questioning, discovery, exploration and experimentation.7. Community connection - great schools are deeply connected with their community. They recognize parents as their first and most important partners and build relationships with community-based organizations, business and higher education institutions to enhance learning and better support students and families. 8. Serve all kids - great schools are equitable. They serve students that reflective of their community's socioeconomic diversity and provide support and accountability systems for students and staff that ensure long term connections to the school. These schools come in a variety of formats with focus on science, technology, engineering, and math as well as international business, health, and the arts. The schools are mostly operated by local school districts under specific design principles. New Tech Network has a 95% graduation rate, a 85% cohort graduation rate (% of freshman who attend all 4 years an graduate), and consistently outperforms district peers. Many of these schools are located in low income urban areas. One such school is the School of Global Studies in Los Angeles which has a consistent 95% graduation rate with less than 5% attrition/transfer rate.

They measure student success based on three indicators: academic achievement, quality of student work, and evidence of engagement. They work with districts and charter schools. Their network of schools has a 90%+ graduation rate and an 80%+ college completion rate which is more than double that of the national average.Big Picture takes student personalization and relevancy of learning to the next level. The entire curriculum and schedule is tailored to the student's needs. There are no classes and the majority of learning happens in hands-on real-life projects in community-based internships.

EdVisions Schools, Inc. is a Minnesota non-profit educational development organization affiliated with EdVisions Cooperative, the first public school teacher cooperative in the nation. EdVisions Schools help create and sustain a network of 38 small, innovative high schools across the U.S. that are teacher led and engage students in rigorous real world projects that infuse technology and collaborative learning. In 2008, over 82% of EdVisions graduates went on to two or four year degree programs 8 (the national average was 68%). At the same time, alumni from the Minnesota New Country School, the flagship EdVisions school, reported that 69% were graduates of two or four year degree programs and 22% were still enrolled in higher education.

Concept Schools operates 26+ charters in the Midwest and Great Lakes region. Their schools focus on science, technology, engineering, and math and delivers high achievement rates. Several of their schools have won the Blue Ribbon award for excellence from the U.S. Department of Education. The classroom work is traditional but students learning experiences are supplemented by participating in various math and science fairs and Olympiad competitions that engage them in real world problem solving work.One Concept school, The Horizon Science Academy Cleveland, won a bronze medal for outstanding achievement by US News and World Report news magazine best Charter School for 2008. Identify 25-50 people in your community who are leaders. This group should be an equal mix of civic, business, education leaders, teachers, and parents. Discuss the future of the community and the impact of the drop out rate. Take the group on a Dream Big Great School Tour to visit a few great school models.
Form an organizing committee with a mix of business, civic, and education leaders that meets at least monthly. This committee's goal is to establish one or more high performing schools in the community. They will need to determine:1. What school model they want to implement.2. The ideal location.3. The ideal format (e.g. school within a school, new school, transformed existing school, charter school or district school.) The committee will also help secure the resources needed.
The community will contract with the school model provider/replication organization and follow their implementation protocols.The committee will help ensure the proper conditions are present to support and sustain the selected school models (e.g. policies, regulations, and resources.)
